The Basic Wolves will challenge the Doral Academy Red Rock Dragons at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Basic is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over Southeast Career Tech. The Wolves might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Melanie Hughes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits and racked up 11 Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Isabella Christensen, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Samantha Marquez was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last four times Doral Academy Red Rock and Legacy have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Saturday. The Dragons came out on top against the Longhorns by a score of 8-5. The victory continues a trend for the Dragons in their matchups with the Longhorns: they've now won seven in a row.
Gabriella Rodriguez was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Kalea Copenhefer, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Basic is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-11 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Doral Academy Red Rock, their victory bumped their record up to 23-4.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Basic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .380. However, it's not like Doral Academy Red Rock struggles in that department as they've averaged .352. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Basic's way against Doral Academy Red Rock when the teams last played two weeks ago, as Basic made off with a 13-6 win. Will the Wolves repeat their success, or do the Dragons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
