Boyle County is 9-1 against Southwestern since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Rebels will welcome the Warriors at 6:00 p.m. Boyle County's pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so Southwestern's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Boyle County had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Mercer County on Wednesday. The Rebels' pitcher stepped up to hand the Titans a 6-0 shutout. The Rebels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
The result came thanks to Caeden Patterson's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kyler Claunch was a standout: he got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Cole Jarnagin was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Boyle County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mercer County only posted an OBP of .154.
Meanwhile, Southwestern fell victim to Somerset and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They came up short against the Briar Jumpers, falling 9-0. The Warriors haven't had much luck with the Briar Jumpers recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Southwestern saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jackson Couch, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Couch is becoming a predictor of the Warriors' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 3-1 (and 8-12 when he doesn't).
Boyle County is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. As for Southwestern, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-13.
Boyle County took their victory against Southwestern in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 13-1 score. Will the Rebels repeat their success, or do the Warriors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
