Mentor and Brunswick are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Cardinals will host the Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Tuesday, Mentor got the win against Kenston by a conclusive 12-5.
Jacob Gunvelson looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mentor got a massive performance out of Austin Vanhuss, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs Vanhuss has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Vanhimbergen, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Mentor kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kenston only managed seven hits.
Meanwhile, Brunswick made easy work of Shaker Heights on Wednesday and carried off a 15-6 win. The victory continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their matchups with the Red Raiders: they've now won nine in a row.
Nolan Burke looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Connor Adams, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Another player making a difference was Gavin Moore, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Mentor's win was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-2. As for Brunswick, their victory bumped their record up to 4-5.
Mentor was able to grind out a solid win over Brunswick in their previous matchup on Thursday, winning 4-0. Do the Cardinals have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
