Lila Manfredonia spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up 19 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Brooke Vollman was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Colleen Coletta, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McDonald). They put the hurt on Memorial with a sharp 20-1 win on Wednesday. Considering the Blue Devils have won six contests by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Marissa Colarich made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Colarich was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophia Pecchia, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Addison Grewell was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
McDonald always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .650. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Independence's victory bumped their record up to 6-3. As for McDonald, their win bumped their record up to 11-2.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Independence has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .466. However, it's not like McDonald struggles in that department as they've averaged .431. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
