3A Western Slope recap November 13, 2013
Levi Hoaglund of Palisade ran for the longest rushing play in 3A Western Slope this season against Lutheran last week. Hoaglund scampered for 126 yards on the play and finished with 123 on the day as his team defeated the Lions.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Glenwood Springs beat Elizabeth 14-13. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Demons.
Cade Gafford threw for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns. He went 11-24 with 1 interception.
Jonney Pounce provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Delta topped Holy Family. Pounce's favorite target this week was Ryan Whiteside, who caught 7 passes for 131 yards.
Pounce was a force in the backfield as the Panthers bested the Tigers.
Kellin Leigh was the best wideout in the league this week as Rifle fell to Coronado. Leigh racked up 3 receptions for 134 yards. Austin Knight helped Rifle's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 19 yards.
Delta's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Panthers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Gafford has thrown for 1,907 yards and 23 touchdowns this season, while Whiteside has 64 catches for 1,006 yards.
Javier Nunez has rushed for 984 yards on 115 carries so far this year.
Going into this week's game against Glenwood Springs, Delta's Gafford needs 93 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.
A big matchup in 3A Western Slope this week will be when Ben Johnson's team takes on the Demons. At the moment, the Panthers are in fourth, while Glenwood Springs is in third.
Delta and Holy Family played the closest game in the league this week, with Delta eventually emerging with a 42-41 victory. Pounce ran for 215 yards during the win.
