Basketball Recap: Heritage Christian Falls Despite Big Games from Alex Ophoff and Andrew Regnerus

After flying high against Granger Christian last Tuesday, Heritage Christian came back down to earth. The match between the Heritage Christian Defenders and the Victory Christian Academy Lions didn't end well, with the Heritage Christian Defenders falling 79-61. That makes it the first time this season the Defenders have let down their home crowd.

Andrew Regnerus and Alex Ophoff certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Regnerus almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds, while Ophoff went 6 of 7 on his way to 14 points. Those 14 points gave Ophoff a new career-high.

Gavin Whitaker was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 12 rebounds for Victory Christian Academy. Whitaker's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Micah Isensee, who went 8 of 17 on his way to 19 points.

Heritage Christian's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 3-1. As for Victory Christian Academy, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-1.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Calumet Christian the next time they take the court. Heritage Christian will host Calumet Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, while Victory Christian Academy will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
