On Wednesday, the Edgewater Eagles faced the Winter Haven Blue Devils in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Edgewater was outmatched by Winter Haven at home and fell 79-42. It was the first time this season that Edgewater let down their fans at home.
Edgewater's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Donovan Williams Jr., who scored 14 points. Fabian Taylor was another key contributor, scoring five points along with three steals.
Edgewater struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Winter Haven had a senior duo take command as Isaac Celiscar scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and three steals and Jamie Phillips jr scored 13 points along with eight assists and eight rebounds. Phillips jr is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyrese Mayo, who scored 11 points.
Edgewater's defeat ended a 12-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-4. As for Winter Haven, the victory was the 17th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-1.
Edgewater will head out on the road to challenge Winter Park at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Winter Park has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. Winter Haven's road trip will continue as they head out to face Riviera Prep at 6:40 p.m. on January 20th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in the nation (Riviera Prep is ranked 61st, while Winter Haven is ranked 41st).
