Goddard hasn't had much luck against Lovington recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Rockets will take on the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. Goddard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Four must be Goddard's lucky number: they beat Portales with that score not once but twice on Thursday. The Rockets walked away with a 4-1 win over the Rams. The victory continues a trend for the Rockets in their matchups with the Rams: they've now won eight in a row.
Vivianna Morales spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on ten hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Roxanna Serrano, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March of 2024. Marisol Hernandez was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs.
Meanwhile, Lovington faced Artesia in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Wildcats fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 3-2. The Wildcats' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Lovington also let their pitcher toss all eight innings and she was also dialed-in: Daphne Utajara gave up only one earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up ten Ks.
At the plate, Lovington saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Zabri Rodriguez, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Goddard pushed their record up to 13-7 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Lovington, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 14-6.
Goddard suffered a grim 13-2 defeat to Lovington in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Rockets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
