The Modesto Panthers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their third straight loss. They took a hard 74-56 fall against Downey. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Several Panthers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Andrew Poulsen, who scored 18 points. Another player making a difference was Phillip Gonder, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Modesto struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Downey racked up 21 assists.
Jayden Coelho was his usual excellent self, scoring 28 points along with six assists and three steals for Downey. That makes it four consecutive games in which Coelho has scored at least a third of Downey's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Collin Eden, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Modesto has not been sharp recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Downey, their victory bumped their record up to 7-12.
Modesto will head out on the road to square off against Gregori at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Gregori presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Modesto in California (Gregori is ranked 564th, while Modesto is ranked 1162nd). As for Downey, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Turlock at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
