Sunnyside is 9-1 against Marana since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Blue Devils will be playing at home against the Tigers at 6:00 p.m.
Sunnyside's last matchup with Cienega could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's matchup on Wednesday. The Blue Devils wound up with the same score they had in their last game (9-1), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. Their loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Sunnyside saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alyssa Gonsalez, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run. That triple was Gonsalez's first of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Marana). They blew past Rincon/University 21-1 on Tuesday. Considering the Tigers have won 14 games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Emma Winter looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Marana let Kyla Layton and Lani Toeaina run wild. Layton fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-2, while Toeaina fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-3. Those five RBI gave Layton a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Maya Cormell, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Marana kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
Marana's victory bumped their record up to 20-2. As for Sunnyside, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-7.
Marana's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Sunnyside has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Marana, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.9 strikeouts. Will Sunnyside keep running through batters, or will the Tigers buck the trend?
Sunnyside was able to grind out a solid win over Marana in their previous meeting back in April of 2025, winning 5-1. Do the Blue Devils have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
