Basketball Recap: Olympic Takes a Loss

Olympic lost against Porter Ridge back in December of 2022 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Olympic Trojans took a 44-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Porter Ridge Pirates. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 304th, while the Pirates are ranked 48th).

Despite the defeat, Olympic saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Chaya James dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 boards. James is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least ten every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Arianna Shaw, who posted nine points along with five assists and five boards.

Even though they lost, Olympic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive games.

Leading Porter Ridge to victory were Ashanti Taylor and Kali Williams. Taylor dropped a double-double on 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Williams had 13 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. That makes it ten consecutive games in which Taylor has scored at least a third of Porter Ridge's points.

Olympic has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Porter Ridge, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-1.

Olympic wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 39-37 loss against Arborbrook Christian Academy on the 21st. As for Porter Ridge, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 55-20 victory against Mount Pleasant on the 20th.
