The Honey Grove Warriors will challenge the Union Grove Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Honey Grove is coming into the contest hot, having won their last seven games.
On Friday, Honey Grove made easy work of Pewitt and carried off a 28-8 win. The Warriors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by 20 points or more this season.
Honey Grove's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ryelan Morris, who rushed for 159 yards and one TD on only 12 carries. Morris really tore up the turf during one magnificent 85-yard run. The team also got some help courtesy of Jarrmez Daniels, who rushed for 52 yards and one touchdown on only five carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Honey Grove was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 294 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 196 rushing yards in four consecutive games.
Union Grove's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Beckville on Friday. The Lions simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Big Sandy 55-0. The contest marked the Lions' most dominant win of the season.
Union Grove found their leader in sophomore Brycen Porter, who threw for 99 yards and a pair of TDs on perfect 6-for-6 passing, and also rushed for 40 yards. Porter's superb passer rating of 177.1 also marked a new season-high.
Union Grove didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Konner Long, Andy Peck, and Hudson Wightman picked up one apiece. Peck also made five total tackles, which is notable because Union Grove is 6-1 when he posts at least three total tackles, but 1-2 otherwise. Long got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Union Grove, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Wightman, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
Honey Grove's record is now 9-1. As for Union Grove, their record now sits at 7-3.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Honey Grove has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 298.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Union Grove struggles in that department as they've been averaging 160.9 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
