Berkeley is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will head out on the road to take on the Mt. Eden Monarchs at 4:00 p.m. Berkeley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Berkeley didn't have quite enough to beat Encinal and fell 5-4. The Yellowjackets haven't had much luck with the Jets recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.
Mia Kaufman was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Camil Babij Ross, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Mt. Eden made easy work of San Lorenzo on Wednesday and carried off a 15-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Monarchs, who have now won four games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Kealani Temoche was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five). She was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Shelby Newcomb was incredible, scoring four runs while going 2-for-4. Jasmine Cruz was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Mt. Eden always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
The victory made it two in a row for Mt. Eden and bumps their season record up to 4-2. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Berkeley, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Berkeley beat Mt. Eden 8-5 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Berkeley since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
