Baseball Game Preview: Wheeler Lions vs. Ledyard Colonels

Wheeler and Ledyard are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Lions will face off against the Colonels at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Wheeler is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.

Seven must be Wheeler's lucky number: they beat Concord Academy with that score not once but twice on Wednesday. The Lions beat Concord Academy by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 7-3.

James Main and Garett Lenihan made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Main struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Lenihan struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Main got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base, while Lenihan got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Luke Dowry, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Wheeler always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Concord Academy only posted an OBP of .250.

Meanwhile, Ledyard fell victim to Montville and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Wolves, falling 10-0. The Colonels haven't had much luck with the Wolves recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.

Ledyard's loss dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Wheeler, their record is now 7-3.

Everything went Wheeler's way against Ledyard in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Wheeler made off with a 9-3 win. Will the Lions repeat their success, or do the Colonels have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
