Kelvin Taylor will likely rush for more yards than any high school player in history — but it won't be a national record.

Kelvin Taylor of Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.) is within 15 yards of Ken Hall's all-time career national rushing total of 11,232, but when he passes Hall in Friday's matchup with Summit Christian (West Palm Beach, Fla.), he will not be recognized as the all-time record holder.
That's because the National Federation of High Schools does not recognize any varsity totals achieved while the player is in seventh or eighth grade. Taylor played varsity football for Glades Day as an eighth grader and gained over 1,500 yards. As a result, he's about to surpass one of the most revered high school football records in the nation.
While the NFHS Record Book will not recognize Taylor's passing of Hall, Taylor is hardly alone when it comes to holding "unofficial" national records. With 7th and 8th graders able to play varsity sports in states such as Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Florida, to name a few, there are a number of athletes who have better career varsity totals than the actual recognized national record holder.
Here's a look at 10 national records recognized by the NFHS that actually have an "unofficial" all-time leader.
10. Volleyball Assists
National Record: 6,102 -
Chelsea Wintzinger,
Huntsville (Ala.) 2006-09
Unofficial Record: 7,655 - Wintzinger, 2004-09
Notes: Due to the high number of matches Alabama teams play each year, Wintzinger's recognized national record is still nearly 340 assists greater than the next closest player on the list. Add in her additional 1,553 assists during her seventh and eighth grade seasons and her unofficial record is nearly 2,000 assists more than No. 2.
9. Girls Basketball Assists
National Record: 1,169 - Mary Johnson,
Longview (Texas), 1980-83
Unofficial Record: 1,626 - Tonya Tice,
Phil Campbell (Ala.),
Pell City (Ala.) and
Hamilton (Ala.), 1985-91
Notes: Tice does rank No. 2 on the all-time national list with 1,085 assists, but she played at least three other seasons of varsity basketball, possibly starting in sixth grade, and accumulated an additional 541 assists. She was Miss Basketball in Alabama in 1991.
8. Volleyball Kills
National Record: 3,584 - Alisha Glass,
Leland (Mich.), 2003-06
Unofficial Record: 4,019 - Kryssi Daniels,
Curry (Jasper, Ala.), 2010-11;
Winston County (Double Springs, Ala.), 2006-09
Notes: There are a number of Alabama state records that could be on the all-time national career lists and this is one of them. Kryssi Daniels had 3,284 career kills in grades 9-12, but that total is not listed in the national record book. It would place her second all-time. Add in her additional 735 kills during her seventh and eighth grade seasons and she's over 400 kills ahead of the recognized leader.
7. Softball RBIs
National Record: 304 - Kelly Kennedy,
Light & Life Christian (Taylor, Mich.), 1991-94
Unofficial Record: 387 - Tara Donaldson,
Baker (Mobile, Ala.), 2000-05
Notes: Tara Donaldson is the queen of unofficial all-time records as she appears twice on this list (with an honorable mention). In six years of varsity softball, she belted 387 RBI to top the official record by 83.
6. Softball Hits
National Record: 365 - Holly Currie,
Pisgah (Ala.), 2000-03
Unofficial Record: 477 - Tara Donaldson, Baker (Ala.), 2000-05
Notes: Donaldson also holds the unofficial record for doubles with 135, whereas the national record is 78, by - Tonya Nicole Calkins of North Branch (Mich.). It should be noted that Currie's mark is not even the second-best mark in Alabama history. It actually ranks fourth. Kristy Roberts of Danville had 444 RBI from 2001-05 and Ella Denes of Pisgah had 380 RBI from 2007-11.
5. Wrestling Wins
National Record: 284 - Colton Palmer,
Riverside (Durham, N.C.), 2004-07
Unofficial Record: 326 - Ben Smith,
Buckhorn (New Market, Ala.), 2007-12
Notes: It should be noted that Palmer holds the record according to the National Federation of High Schools, however his total ranks only fourth on the Wrestling USA Magazine list of national records. That publication lists Pete Baldwin of Life Academy and Osceola high schools in Kissimmee (Fla.) as the all-time leader with 324 from 2004-11. However Smith broke that mark last year with his 326th win.
4. Softball Home Runs
National Record: 72 -
Shelby Holley,
Pisgah (Ala.), 2008-11
Unofficial Record: 78 - Holley, 2006-11
Notes: Like Wintzinger, Holley actually holds the official record and the unofficial record. She beats out hard-luck Holly Currie who was the official leader with 61 home runs while at Pisgah.
3. Softball Strikeouts
National Record: 2,328 - Alicia Hollowell,
Fairfield (Calif.), 1999-2002
Unofficial Record: 2,463 - Hilary Phillips,
Ider (Ala.), 2004-09
Notes: Alicia Hollowell's record is very impressive considering California doesn't play nearly as many games as teams in Michigan and Alabama, two states that dominate the national records lists. However Phillips edges out Hollowell by 135 strikeouts thanks to an additional two years on the varsity.
2. Softball Wins
National Record: 159 - Holly Currie, Pisgah (Ala.), 2000-03
Unofficial Record: 197 - Hilary Phillips, Ider (Ala.), 2004-09
Notes: Like her RBI total, Currie's win total is actually just the fourth-best total in Alabama history. Stephanie Brown of Colbert Heights had 167 wins and Lauren Seibert of West Morgan had 165.
1. Boys Basketball Points
National Record: 6,702 - Greg Procell,
Ebarb (Noble, La.), 1967-70
Unofficial Record: 7,457 - Demond "Tweety" Carter, Reserve Christian (Reserve, La.), 2001-2006
Notes: Louisiana is the king of high-scoring basketball players. The top three all-time scorers in national history come from Louisiana, but ironically Tweety Carter is nowhere on the list. Nevertheless, his six-year total at Reserve Christian (where he led the team to five state championships), outpaces the all-time leader Procell by 755 points.
