Midland Empire recap October 22, 2013
Maryville added to the longest winning streak in Midland Empire this week by beating Savannah, 28-9. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Lafayette took down Bishop LeBlond 31-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Drew Cortez threw for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns during the win.
Dakota Calhoon was a passing and rushing force as Cameron bested Benton. He completed 3 passes for 72 yards and also ran for 106 yards. Calhoon's key target this week was Kody Petersen, who caught 2 passes for 50 yards.
Nolan Gromacki was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 170 yards on 19 carries as Smithville topped Chillicothe. Teammate Charlie Nihart added to the ground attack by rushing for 22 yards.
5-foot-10 quarterback Cortez of the Fighting Irish is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,984. He has also thrown 21 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Tyler Thrasher. The Bishop LeBlond star has 34 catches for 480 yards.
Entering into this week's contest against Maryville, Cortez is short just 16 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Matt Webb's team takes on robert kustel's team. At the moment, the Spoofhounds are in first, while the Fighting Irish are in fourth.
