The upcoming 2020-21 high school basketball season continues to see changes around the county. The City of Palms Classic is the latest major national event to announce plans to cancel due to ongoing concerns around the coronavirus pandemic.
Held in Fort Myers, Fla., and annually the premier holiday tournament at the prep level, City of Palms announced Wednesday it would not be moving forward with its 48th annual tournament until December 2021.
Other events to announce they would not be moving forward as scheduled include the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia, Chick-fil-A Classic in South Carolina, 'Iolani Classic in Hawaii, John Wall Holiday Invitational in North Carolina, Kevin Durant National Hoopfest (multiple cities) and Slam Dunk to the Beach in Delaware.
Notable teams who were scheduled to participate in the City of Palms Classic included
Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.),
IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.),
Milton (Ga.),
St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio),
Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah),
Legacy Early College (Greenville, S.C.),
Houston (Germantown, Tenn.) and
West Oaks Academy (Orlando, Fla.), among others.
Each of the past two national champions have participated in the Classic.
