Even though the Holmes Huskies scored an imposing 58 points on Saturday, the Harlan Hawks still came out on top. Harlan took down Holmes 74-58. Given Harlan's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while Holmes is ranked 457th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Harlan to victory, but perhaps none more so than Justin Nelson, who scored 20 points. It was the first time this season that Nelson scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Mangum, who scored 17 points.
Joseph Ramon and Amare Guerra certainly did their best on Saturday to avoid the loss. Ramon scored 20 points along with two steals, while Guerra scored 20 points along with three steals. That was a full 34.5% of Holmes' points, marking the sixth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Isaac Martinez, who scored nine points along with six assists and five rebounds.
Harlan has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-10 record this season. As for Holmes, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-18.
Harlan will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Jay at 6:00 p.m. Jay has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Holmes, they will head out on the road to face off against Brennan at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Holmes has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 219 points over their last three matches.
