Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up seven more assists than your opponent, a fact the Lutheran Lions proved on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Cheyenne Mountain with a sharp 41-20 victory. Given Lutheran's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 83rd, while the Red-Tailed Hawks are ranked 243rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Lutheran found their leader in underclassman Berkley Schneider, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds. Schneider is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayda Vigil, who scored eight points along with eight steals.
Lutheran pushed their record up to 10-9 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.1 points per game. As for Cheyenne Mountain, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-15 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lutheran will face off against the Bears at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Palmer Ridge has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Cheyenne Mountain, they will head out on the road to square off against the Rangers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Lewis-Palmer focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Wednesday.
