The Mize Bulldogs will challenge the Jefferson Davis County Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Mize is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Mize fell victim to Enterprise and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against Enterprise, falling 7-0. Mize hasn't had much luck with Enterprise recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Mize saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Marissa Reyes, who went 1-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, Jefferson Davis County had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Aggies as they made off with an 11-4 win. Considering the Jaguars have won ten contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
D'Zayvianna Peyton made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 11 games.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kavionna Myers, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Chancey McRaney was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Jefferson Davis County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Forrest County Agricultural only posted an OBP of .261.
Jefferson Davis County's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-1. As for Mize, their loss dropped their record down to 14-9.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mize hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Jefferson Davis County struggles in that department as they've averaged .379. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
