The Wakefield Wolverines waltzed into their contest on Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They were the clear victor by a 66-43 margin over Wake Forest. Given Wakefield's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 37th, while the Cougars are ranked 483rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Taj Boone-Chambers was his usual excellent self, scoring 20 points along with two steals. He hasn't dropped below 20 points for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Syncere Burnette, who scored 11 points.
When it comes to explaining why Wake Forest lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jayce McDonald. Despite the final result, he scored eight points along with two steals and two blocks. It was the first time this season that McDonald grabbed two or more steals. Palmer Chase was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Wake Forest struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They are winless (0-4) when they can't control their own glass like that.
Wakefield's victory bumped their record up to 14-2. As for Wake Forest, they dropped their record down to 1-15 with that defeat, which was their eighth straight at home.
Wakefield will take on the Wildcats at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Millbrook knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully the Wolverines like a good challenge. As for Wake Forest, they will head out on the road to challenge the Huskies at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Heritage focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday.
