Even though the Lutheran Mustangs scored an imposing 65 points on Thursday, the La Marque Cougars still came out on top. La Marque escaped with a win against Lutheran by the margin of a single free throw, 66-65. The win made it back-to-back wins for La Marque.
La Marque's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tiana Burton, who scored 19 points. That makes it two consecutive games in which Burton has scored at least 25% of La Marque's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Taryl Jones, who scored 18 points.
The last time La Marque lost on the road was back back in November. Having now won four straight away games, they've pushed their record up to 3-9. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.0 points per game. As for Lutheran, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. La Marque will face off against Brazosport at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lutheran will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on John Paul II at 4:00 p.m. on December 20th.
