Haylee Garthwait was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.
Garthwait wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Haylee Trevathan, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was Trevathan's first of the season.
Meanwhile, Watertown came tearing into Monday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They didn't even let the Dragons on the board, marking their second-straight 16-0 shutout. The Purple Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven contests by ten runs or more this season.
Like Monterey, Watertown also got a great game from a two-way player: Avery Taylor. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Taylor was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Lilyana Polli was excellent, scoring three runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Wood, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Watertown was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .471. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in four consecutive games.
Watertown pushed their record up to 9-6 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Monterey, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6-1.
