Calvary Christian Academy hasn't had much luck against Greenwood Mennonite recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Calvary Christian Academy LIONS will take on the Greenwood Mennonite Flames at 5:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Calvary Christian Academy came up short against Aquinas Academy and fell 51-42. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the LIONS came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Delaware basketball rankings (they are ranked 40th, while the Crusaders are ranked 166th).
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from JR Gillespie (HS), who went 6 for 14 on his way to 14 points. Sean Sensenig (HS) was another key player, going 5 of 12 en route to 15 points.
Meanwhile, Greenwood Mennonite put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victor by a 43-19 margin over Holly Grove Christian. The Flames have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matches by 22 points or more this season.
Calvary Christian Academy better keep an eye on Carter Long. He was instrumental in Greenwood Mennonite's win, going 11 for 21 on his way to 31 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Long is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Blake Mast, who posted six points and three steals.
Greenwood Mennonite's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-0. As for Calvary Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Calvary Christian Academy has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27 boards per game. However, it's not like Greenwood Mennonite struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Calvary Christian Academy ended up a good deal behind Greenwood Mennonite in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, losing 59-40. Can Calvary Christian Academy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
