Softball Recap: Unaka Comes Up Short

Unaka extended their losing streak to four on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 5-10 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-2 heartbreaker at the hands of the Hampton Bulldogs. The Rangers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Kimberly Proffitt spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on four hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Brooklyn Campbell made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season.

As for Hampton, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-14 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games.

On Hampton's side, they also let their pitcher toss all eight innings and she was also dialed-in: Briley Davis gave up just two earned runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Malory Lamb, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. Lauren Smith was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Unaka will host North Greene at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hampton, they will be playing at home against Cloudland at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
