Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Newman Greenies, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They fell 35-27 to the Cavaliers on Friday. Newman was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Calvary Baptist Academy apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2018.
Newman's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Eli Friend, who threw for 194 yards and four touchdowns. Peter Loop also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Leading Calvary Baptist Academy to victory were Abram Wardell and James Simon. Wardell threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns, while Simon gained 208 total yards and two touchdowns. Wardell has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last three times he's played.
Newman's defeat dropped their record down to 10-2. As for Calvary Baptist Academy, their win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-0.
Newman does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Calvary Baptist Academy will square off against St. Charles Catholic at TBD on Saturday. St. Charles Catholic is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
