South Summit has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on The Layton Christian Academy Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, South Summit took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 48-7 win over Delta. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 27-0.
South Summit had a senior duo take command as Bracken Lassche threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes and Trey Stembridge rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries.
Another reason for the win was South Summit's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. Leading the way was Noah Gunnerson and his three sacks.
Meanwhile, Layton Christian Academy entered their tilt with Providence Hall with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Layton Christian Academy really took it to Providence Hall for the full four quarters, racking up a 51-0 victory at home. Layton Christian Academy pushed the score to 44-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Providence Hall had no chance of recovering from.
Layton Christian Academy found their leader in underclassman Trevor Halalilo, who rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry. Halalilo hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Marcus Miles, who rushed for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
South Summit's victory was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 9-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 42.5 points per game. As for Layton Christian Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season.
South Summit beat Layton Christian Academy 28-21 when the teams last played back in September. The rematch might be a little tougher for South Summit since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
