Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for The East Wilkes Cardinals, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They took a hard 33-15 fall against Mitchell on Friday. East Wilkes was down 27-7 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Despite the loss, East Wilkes saw an underclassman step up: Reece Dobbins rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown on only six carries. Dobbins was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 55 yards.
Leading Mitchell to victory were Chase Duncan and Rylan Cooper. Duncan rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.7 yards per carry, while Cooper rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.7 yards per carry.
East Wilkes' loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Mitchell, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-2.
East Wilkes does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Mitchell will head out on the road to face off against Mount Airy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Mount Airy's favor is that they have now posted big point totals every time they've taken the field this season.
