The Gilpin County Eagles will head out on the road to take on the Dawson School Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gilpin County is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
Gilpin County suffered their biggest loss since November 30, 2023 on Saturday. They were dealt a 59-24 defeat at the hands of Clear Creek. Gilpin County has struggled against Clear Creek recently, as their matchup on Saturday was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.
Gilpin County's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Lane Willis, who scored four points along with seven rebounds and three steals, and Ben Bushey who scored four points along with 11 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Bushey pulled down eight or more rebounds.
Even though they lost, Gilpin County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Dawson School struggled with assists on Friday (SkyView Academy had nine more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Dawson School received a tough blow as they fell 57-42 to SkyView Academy. Dawson School's loss continues an unfortunate trend for the squad, making it four in a row.
Despite the loss, Dawson School had strong showings from Peter Ernst, who scored nine points along with 14 rebounds, and Isaiah Tu, who scored 14 points. Tu continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Derek Krug, who scored six points along with two steals.
Gilpin County bumped their record down to 0-10 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 19.2 points per game. As for Dawson School, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Gilpin County have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 19.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Dawson School, though, as they've been averaging only 33.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
