Basketball Recap: Athens' Win Ends Six-Game Losing Streak at Home

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Athens). They took down the River Valley Raiders 66-51 on Friday. With that win, the Bulldogs brought their scoring average up to 52.8 points per game.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Athens to victory, but perhaps none more so than Easton Nuzum, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards. The dominant performance gave Nuzum a new career-high in points. Leo Martin was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards.

Athens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as River Valley only pulled down eight offensive boards.

When it comes to explaining why River Valley lost, don't look at Braden Bennett. Despite the final result, he went 8 of 17 on his way to 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gary Truance, who posted five points and six rebounds.

Athens' victory ended a six-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-2. As for River Valley, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Athens and Vinton County will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Athens has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for River Valley, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 57-49 loss against Gallia Academy on the 14th.
