The Berne Union Rockets are taking a road trip to take on the Millersport Lakers at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Berne Union has given up an average of 8 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Berne Union fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Fisher Catholic on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 12-8 to the Irish. The Rockets haven't had much luck with the Irish recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Berne Union saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Josilyn Hedges, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Aleah Smiley was another, going 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI.
Millersport couldn't beat Grove City Christian on Monday even though they stacked four runs on them in the fifth inning. The Lakers fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 8-7.
Kendyl Bonkowski put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up five earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Emma Raver was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Berne Union's record now sits at 10-8. As for Millersport, their record is now 13-6.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Berne Union has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .515. However, it's not like Millersport struggles in that department as they've averaged .554. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Berne Union might still be hurting after the 16-5 loss they got from Millersport in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Rockets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
