Capitan is a perfect 10-0 against Lordsburg since June of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Tigers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mavericks at 2:00 p.m. Capitan is looking for their season's first win.
Capitan fell victim to Mesilla Valley Christian School and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They lost 24-0 to the SonBlazers.
Capitan saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Issac Kern, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Lordsburg, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They came out on top against Mescalero Apache by a score of 9-6 on Tuesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Mavericks as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Anthony Retana made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Lordsburg is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-4 otherwise. Retana was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Victor Valdez was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Lordsburg is 5-1 when Valdez posts two or more runs, but 0-4 otherwise.
The win got Lordsburg back to even at 5-5. As for Capitan, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Capitan has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Lordsburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Capitan's way against Lordsburg in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Capitan made off with a 25-11 victory. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mavericks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
