The Trinity Christian Gryphons were the 53-17 winner over the St. Michael the Archangel Warriors when they last played one another back in February of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Trinity Christian was just a bucket shy of victory on Tuesday and fell 33-32 to St. Michael the Archangel. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Trinity Christian came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while St. Michael the Archangel is ranked 243rd).
St. Michael the Archangel's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Anjalia Bryant, who scored ten points along with five steals. Bryant hasn't dropped below two steals for six straight games. Another player making a difference was Janaye Martinez, who scored five points along with 21 rebounds and six blocks.
Trinity Christian has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-4 record this season. As for St. Michael the Archangel, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-4.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Trinity Christian won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Oakcrest at 5:30 p.m. on January 24th. Oakcrest and Trinity Christian are at an even 3-3 over their past six head-to-heads. As for St. Michael the Archangel, they will head out on the road to square off against Christchurch School at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Christchurch School focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Wednesday.
