After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Wharton, the Durant Cougars were happy to have found some success on Wednesday. They took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 72-42 victory over Spoto. Given Durant's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 136th, while Spoto is ranked 470th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Durant got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Wylde Correa out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds. Correa has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Austin White, who scored 17 points.
When it comes to explaining why Spoto lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jose Deleon. Despite the final result, he scored 16 points along with three steals and two blocks. Deleon is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Jerren Rodriguez was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Durant has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season. As for Spoto, their loss dropped their record down to 6-9.
Durant and Plant will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Plant knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight matchups -- so hopefully Durant likes a good challenge. Spoto's road trip will continue as they head out to face Carrollwood Day at 5:00 p.m. on January 20th. Hopefully Carrollwood Day focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 30 on Thursday.
