Video: Derrick Henry breaks the rushing record
See the Titans star during his time at Yulee.
In 1988, Brett Law set the national record for points in a season. In the 31 years since, his record has faced a serious threat only twice.
As a junior at Sheridan (Ind.) in 1988, Law was the team's leading rusher and kicker during a 14-0 season under legendary coach Bud Wright. He rushed for 55 touchdowns, scored a total of 66, kicked 54 extra points and one field goal for 453 total points. He scored 34 points in the championship game alone to set a state record. At the end of the season, he was the Class 1A state Player of the Year and made first team as both a running back and kicker.
The first threat to Law's record came 12 years later and just 60 miles away in Attica (Ind.). Josh Smith, an all-around athlete who averaged 24 points per game in basketball while leading Attica to a Class 1A state title, rushed for 3,004 yards during the season and scored 449 points. He had a chance to break Law's record in a Class 1A championship game loss to Adams Central, but Attica's fourth-quarter drive ended at the 3-yard line. Smith, who went on to a stellar football career at Navy, finished with 63 touchdowns, 25 extra points and 23 two-point conversions.
In 2011, Joseph Sadler of Devine (Texas) closed to within 12 points of Law's record after he scored 50 points in a 56-42 playoff win over Wharton. He scored seven touchdowns, two 2-point conversions and six extra points to give him 441 points on the year.
However, in the state quarterfinals against Wimberley, Sadler had one touchdown, and extra point and a field goal in a 38-12 loss.
Law went on to set a national record (since broken) with 952 career points by scoring 43 touchdowns and 297 points his senior year, which ended in a second straight Class 1A championship.
Law, Sadler and Smith top MaxPreps' list of the Top 100 all-time single-season scorers in high school football history. The list was compiled with information from the MaxPreps leaderboards, the National Federation of High Schools record book, state association record books and Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School football history.
