Mountainair hasn't had much luck against Alamo Navajo recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Mountainair Mustangs will welcome the Alamo Navajo Cougars at 6:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mountainair is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing Carrizozo: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Mountainair blew Carrizozo out of the water with a 75-23 final score. Winning may never get old, but the Mustangs sure are getting used to it with their ninth in a row.

Mountainair found their leader in sophomore Brody Brazil, who went 7-for-13 from beyond the arc on his way to 27 points. With that strong performance, Brazil is now averaging an impressive 15 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Marcos Sisneros, who shot 50% from the field en route to 14 points in addition to four blocks and three steals.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Alamo Navajo). They blew past Hondo Valley, posting a 99-64 victory. The win was familiar territory for the Cougars, who have now won three matchups in a row.
Alamo Navajo's win came from a few key players Mountainair will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Andy Pino, who dropped a double-double with 32 points and 12 boards. He is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last 18 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Scotty Guerro, who shot 6-for-7 from downtown and dropped a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Alamo Navajo smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 27 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 17 consecutive contests.
Mountainair pushed their record up to 20-6 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to assists: they averaged an imposing 8.5 assists in those games compared to only 5.1 in the others. As for Alamo Navajo, their win bumped their record up to 20-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Mountainair has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 32.3 boards per game. However, it's not like Alamo Navajo struggles in that department as they've been averaging 39.7 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Mountainair against Alamo Navajo in their previous matchup two weeks ago, as the team secured a 78-50 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Pino, who dropped a double-double with 22 points and 12 boards. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Mountainair still be able to contain Pino? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
