East Hampton boys basketball coach Ed Petrie has retired after a half-century career on the bench during which he set a New York State Public High School Athletic Association record for victories.
Petrie, 78, a
New York State Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, compiled a 754-258 record. He eclipsed
Jack Halloran of Whitney Point (630) in 2004 as the public-schools association leader in boys wins.
Petrie, who grew up in Rye, coached at Pierson for a decade before arriving at East Hampton in 1969.
With Bill Merna having retired from
Ogdensburg
in the spring with 599 victories, Rod Chando becomes the NYSPHSAA's
active leader with 591 victories, followed by Mike Rapone at Batavia
Notre
Dame at 546. Jack Curran
of Archbishop Molloy
in the Catholic High School Athletic Association is the overall state boys leader with 924 wins entering the upcoming season.
Bill McKee, an assistant to Petrie since 1988, is the logical candidate to take over Petrie’s position.
FOOTBALL: SWEET HOME GEARS UP FOR THREE-PEATA year ago, defending NYSPHSAA Class A champion
Sweet Home (Amherst) turned on the jets in midseason, first with a solid win at Iroquois and then a 52-0 masterpiece in Week 6 vs. Starpoint. The games served as notice the Panthers were starting to find their stride, and seven weeks later Sweet Home walked out of the Carrier Dome with its second straight NYSPHSAA championship.
If the Panthers three-peat, observers may identify this past weekend as when the pieces started coming together. Sweet Home built a 27-0 halftime lead en route to a 34-6 victory at Grand Island for its 32nd consecutive victory.
"Every year we've had to develop a team — we had some key guys in a few spots, but our line was new and we had some other new guys and it has taken us a while to gel," coach John Faller told The Buffalo News. "We did things on offense, on defense, in special teams.”
Sweet Home fumbled on its first play from scrimmage but scored on its next four possessions to take command.
Quarterback Jordan Johnson went 10-for-14 for 132 yards and two touchdowns, senior Nick Spidell made an interception and caught a 9-yard scoring pass, and Ralph Neasman rushed 18 times for 141 yards.
The teams directly behind Sweet Home in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings also rolled right along:
* No. 2
Aquinas Institute (Rochester) began pulling away in the second quarter and coasted past Canisius 40-16 on three touchdowns from Mike Messina (14 carries, 162 yards). The senior scored on a 57-yard carry on the third play of the third quarter to extend Aquinas' lead to 26-10. The Rochester powerhouse, which won the 2007 state Class A title but lost to Sweet Home in the quarterfinals the last two seasons, has scored 19 straight victories vs. Buffalo's Monsignor Martin Association teams over five seasons.
* No. 3
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, which has lost to Sweet Home in the last two state finals, broke open a 25-7 game with touchdowns on its first two possessions after halftime en route to beating Amsterdam 58-27. Junior Jack Guba ran back an interception 77 yards for a score 13.4 seconds before the half, then returned the second-half kickoff to the BH-BL 42. Four plays later, senior quarterback Keaton Flint (162 rushing yards and four touchdowns) scored on a 31-yard carry.
Flint, an all-state receiver and baseball player as a junior, completed both his throws and caught two passes from backup John Bennison.
MORE FOOTBALL: SECTION VIII HEATS UPNassau County is coming off its most compelling slate of games this season, highlighted by

Kozlakowski scored on a 74-yard run on the second play of the game, and Travis Lock answered Hewlett's first TD with a 90-yard kickoff return for a 14-10 lead. Lenny Canales of Hewlett returned a second-half kickoff 92 yards for a TD, but the Owls then drove more than seven minutes to the crucial touchdown.

Commack 9-1. Commack had ended Brentwood's 78-game league unbeaten streak early last season and owned a 1-0 win in their first matchup this fall.
