Highland Regional (Blackwood, N.J.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 27-12 victory over
Penns Grove (Carneys Point, N.J.) on Saturday. The Tartans took the lead for good when
Derin Sweeney ran for a touchdown.
After trailing 7-6 at the half, the Red Devils went ahead on a
Marcus Hill touchdown run with 5:00 left in the fourth. Highland Regional finally took the lead for the win when Sweeney ran for a touchdown with 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter.
The final outcome was shocking, as HR was ranked No. 203 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for New Jersey, far below Penns Grove's spot at No. 87.
The Blackwood school entered the contest giving up 26.0 points per game this year. The Tartans held firm on the defensive front, and kept PG below the 18.9 points it had been averaging per game.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Highland Regional, which was coming off a 42-0 defeat at the hands of Delsea in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for Penns Grove, which notched a 22-6 victory over Deptford in its previous outing. The loss broke Penns Grove's three-game winning streak.
The Red Devils (6-2) faces off against Pennsville Memorial in a non-conference game their next time out. The Eagles go into the week with a record of 6-1.
