Wellington is 0-1 against Platte Valley since October of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Wellington Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Platte Valley Broncos at 7:00 p.m. Wellington will be coming into the match with an undefeated record on the line.
Last Friday, everything came up roses for Wellington at home against D'Evelyn as the team secured a 46-13 win. Wellington's offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
Wellington relied on the efforts of Cash Altschwager, who rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries, and Tanner Gray, who rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries. Altschwager is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last three games he's played. Teagen Greiman got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Platte Valley had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They blew past Bennett 28-6. Platte Valley pushed the score to 28-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Bennett cut but never quite recovered from.
Among those leading the charge was TALYN SHORT, who rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Bennett to a paltry 210 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Platte Valley's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out three times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was JAYCOB CHAVARRIA-COGBURN and his two sacks.
Wellington's victory was their sixth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 7-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 42.3 points per game. As for Platte Valley, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Wellington has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 379.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Platte Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 199.5 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Wellington suffered a grim 28-6 defeat to Platte Valley when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Thankfully for Wellington, Justin Pfannebecker (who rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
