The Berthoud Spartans will face off against the Resurrection Christian Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Berthoud is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Berthoud made easy work of Greeley Central and carried off a 12-1 victory. The Spartans have beaten the Wildcats the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Wildcats has come to flipping the script.
Trent Jacobs was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Berthoud is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-8 otherwise. Jacobs was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Gage Slaby and Gavin Kirk did most of the damage at the plate: Slaby went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Kirk went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave Slaby a new career-high. Anderson Austin was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Berthoud was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .440. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, after a string of nine wins, Resurrection Christian's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They took a 9-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of Fort Morgan.
Resurrection Christian also got a good showing from Will Busby, who struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and eight unearned) runs off six hits. Busby has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Colton Barber was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Maddox Sessions, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.
Resurrection Christian's loss dropped their record down to 12-5. As for Berthoud, their win bumped their record up to 8-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Berthoud has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Resurrection Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Berthoud couldn't quite get it done against Resurrection Christian when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 12-7. Will the Spartans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
