5A Region 3 recap November 5, 2013
Wayne County added to the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week by beating West Jones, 28-17. The win marks sixth in a row for the the War Eagles.
South Jones lost to Laurel 52-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. LaShawn Kelly was a bright spot for the Braves, as he ran for 58 yards in the defeat.
Wayne County's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. David Hodo threw for 273 and 1 touchdown and Dejarvis Chambers had 221 yards receiving. On the ground Elijah Pugh chipped in 141 yards. Dashun Philon helped Wayne County's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 25 yards.
Todd Mangum's team's dynamic duo of Hodo and Chambers proved to be unstoppable against the Mustangs, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Philon helped Wayne County's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 25 yards.
Chambers had a great week catching the football as the War Eagles topped West Jones. He caught 10 passes for 221 yards.
The Golden Tornadoes' Keon Howard and Octavious Cooley have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Howard has thrown for 2,037 yards this season, while Cooley has 39 catches for 790 yards. Wayne County's Dallas Sims leads the league in rushing yards with 803.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Laurel and Scott Pierson's team. Todd Breland's team enters the game ranked 22nd in the state, while the Mustangs ranks 21st.
One of 5A Region 3's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when the Golden Tornadoes and West Jones face off next week.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Laurel takes on the Mustangs. The Golden Tornadoes have allowed 151 points this season, while West Jones has given up 146. Laurel allowed 7 points last week as it bested South Jones.
