After a string of 22 wins dating back to last season, The Caldwell Chiefs''s good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 33-28 hit to the loss column at the hands of Lakeland Regional. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Caldwell came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey football rankings (they are ranked 28th, while Lakeland Regional is ranked 113th).
Lakeland Regional was led to victory by Collin Sabric and Jake Spear. Sabric threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns, while Spear picked up 166 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Spear was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 65 yards. Kyle Keyes made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Caldwell's defeat dropped their record down to 9-1. As for Lakeland Regional, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season.
Caldwell does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lakeland Regional will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Bernards. Bernards knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully Lakeland Regional likes a good challenge.
