Softball Game Preview: Bellmont Braves vs. Woodlan Warriors

Bellmont and Woodlan are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Braves will challenge the Warriors at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Bellmont is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13 runs per game this season.

Bellmont fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Mississinewa on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Indians by a score of 4-3. The Braves have struggled against the Indians recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Bella Ashley spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on 12 hits.

On the hitting side, Taylor Sutter made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double marked the first that she has hit this season. Sophia Cole was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Woodlan had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Saturday. They blew past the Panthers 14-6. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won five games by eight runs or more so far this season.

Woodlan's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games. As for Bellmont, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

Bellmont couldn't quite get it done against Woodlan when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 9-6. Can the Braves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
