Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Windham). Everything went their way against the Putnam Clippers on Saturday as they made off with a 16-4 victory. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Whippets considering their two-run performance the match before.
Armani Crespo made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Axel Ortiz was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Windham: the team is undefeated when he posts at least three RBI, but 1-16 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jomar Natal, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Windham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .677. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Windham's win ended a seven-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-16. As for Putnam, they are on a 13-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-17.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Windham will square off against St. Bernard at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Whippets are facing the Saints at the right time seeing as the Saints are stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Putnam, they will face off against Ledyard at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
