Softball Recap: Palos Verdes Sets Scoring Season-High Against Banning

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Palos Verdes). They were the clear victors by a 16-6 margin over the Banning Pilots on Monday. The result was nothing new for the Sea Kings, who have now won seven contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Sophia Otera was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Palos Verdes let Mariah Candela and Adela Randazzo run wild. Candela went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Randazzo got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That's the most doubles Candela has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Maddie Gregory, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

Palos Verdes hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in six consecutive matches.

Palos Verdes is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games. As for Banning, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-12.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Palos Verdes will host Redondo Union at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. As for Banning, they will be playing at home against Carson at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Pilots' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Colts have averaged an impressive 10.3 runs per game this season.
