III Section I recap October 22, 2013
Peoria added to the longest winning streak in III Section I this week by beating Goldwater, 48-13. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Greenway lost to Saguaro 48-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Romeo Robertson ran for 25 yards and caught 2 passes for 16 yards in the defeat.
Sunrise Mountain's dynamic duo of Chase Cord and Garrett Weissinger proved tough for Independence to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Cord threw for 199 yards and 2 touchdowns and Weissinger had 80 yards receiving. Marcus Coffey helped Sunrise Mountain's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 53 yards.
He was 10-19 with 1 interception.
Nick Hultquist was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Mustangs defeated the Patriots. The 5-foot-10 defensive back grabbed 1 interception and recorded 1 fumble.
6-foot-1 quarterback Kade Greenhalgh of Greenway is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,234. He has also thrown 16 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Darius Aguirre. The Peoria star has 40 catches for 874 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Peoria takes on second place Sunrise Mountain. Last week, Peoria bested the Bulldogs, while Sunrise Mountain topped Independence.
Cactus's Talal Yousufzai is a mere 28 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 128 carries Yousufzai has put up 972 yards this year.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when James Carter's team takes on Will Babb's team. The Mustangs have allowed 141 points this season, while the Panthers have given up 58. Sunrise Mountain allowed 2 points last week as it defeated Santiago Maldonado's team.
The Cobras led the league in scoring this week after putting up 55 points on Dysart. Yousufzai threw for 55 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 169 yards in the win.
