The St. Paul Lutheran Giants suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Thursday. They were beaten by Saxony Lutheran 66-23. While losing is never fun, St. Paul Lutheran can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Missouri basketball rankings (they are ranked 424th, while Saxony Lutheran is ranked 115th).
Despite the loss, St. Paul Lutheran still got an impressive performance from Mia Sherrill, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and six blocks. Sherrill has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 11 times she's played. Pippa Detring was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, St. Paul Lutheran struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Saxony Lutheran's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Rebecca Johnson, who scored 22 points along with four steals and two blocks. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Evie Caruso, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for St. Paul Lutheran and nudges their season record down to 5-8. As for Saxony Lutheran, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.
St. Paul Lutheran will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Grandview at 6:00 p.m. on January 23rd. As for Saxony Lutheran, they will square off against Neelyville at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Neelyville and Saxony Lutheran are at an even 4-4 over their past eight head-to-heads.
