Basketball Recap: Riverside Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Grace Mahony and Ashley Weltruski

Riverside was the 38-29 winner over Lyons-Decatur Northeast when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Riverside Chargers took a hard 50-34 fall against the Lyons-Decatur Northeast Cougars on Saturday. The Chargers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Riverside's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Ashley Weltruski, who went 5 for 8 on her way to 12 points and seven rebounds, and Grace Mahony, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine steals. Mahony is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last five games she's played.

Among those leading the charge was Tavyanna Parker, who went 6 of 8 on her way to 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lexus Petersen, who posted ten points.

Riverside's defeat dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Lyons-Decatur Northeast, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-6.

Riverside will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Heartland at 6:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. As for Lyons-Decatur Northeast, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Lyons-Decatur Northeast Cougars challenge the Randolph Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lyons-Decatur Northeast is facing Randolph at the right time seeing as Randolph is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
