Baseball Recap: Cottondale Wins Going Away Against Carroll

The Cottondale Hornets got the win against the Carroll Eagles on Wednesday by a conclusive 14-5. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won ten matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

Lane Johnson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Cottondale's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-2 (and 8-9 when he doesn't). Johnson was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March.

In other batting news, Cottondale got a massive performance out of Wyatt Speers, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances. The Hornets are undefeated when Speers posts two or more runs, but 9-11 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Miller, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Cottondale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Cottondale is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Carroll, they dropped their record down to 8-17 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.

Cottondale wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 9-5 victory against Pensacola Catholic on the 10th. As for Carroll, they have also already played their next match, a 15-0 win against Daleville on the 10th.
