The Crownpoint Eagles fell victim to the Thoreau Hawks''s stalwart defense on Friday and couldn't make it onto the board. They had to suffer through a rough 50-0 loss at the hands of the Hawks. It was the first time this season that Crownpoint let down their fans at home.
McKenzie Tsosie rushed for 27 yards.
Thoreau's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tys Nelson, who rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaac Bear Eagle, who threw for 85 yards and a touchdown.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Crownpoint to a paltry 69 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Thoreau's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Isaac Woody and his two sacks.
Crownpoint's defeat dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Thoreau, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-3.
Crownpoint will look to defend their home field on Friday against Cuba at 7:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Cuba is ranked 76th, while Crownpoint is ranked 83rd). As for Thoreau, they will head out on the road to face off against Wingate at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
